Such Audacity.

How dare you?

That is the tacit question behind the looks I’ve gotten sometimes.

How dare you?

How dare you be confident and walk with your head held up high, despite being over 30 and unmarried.

The horror!

How dare you speak up for yourself when an unpleasant situation presents itself.

Who do you think you are?

I see the look sometimes.

It is a hostile look.

It is dank with disdain.

It drips with contempt.

It is slick with scorn.

It stinks of condemnation.

Why won’t you, Ivie, shrivel and cower in their presence?

How dare you resist their advances.

You must really think a lot of yourself.

They look at you, thinking the same thing:

‘I told you that you’re beautiful, and you actually smiled and said ‘thank you”.

‘You didn’t think to have a display of false modesty or low self-esteem and say ‘Me? No,
I’m not looking my best today’.

How dare you.

Such audacity.
